Holiday Season and Year End Thank You

As we move through the holiday season and approach the end of the
calendar year reflection on the year past is on our minds. I think of
the advances we’ve made in amateur radio, especially in the West Texas
Section and the people that have made it happen and continue to make it
happen.

As Section Manager I rely on my Assistant Section Managers, our
Affiliated Club Coordinator, and our Public Information Coordinator who
also serves as our Section Webmaster and our emergency management folks.
Thank you for your time and effort you put forth in support of our
fellow hams.

Our Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) staff do a tremendous job at
helping keep our community’s safe by giving selflessly of their time
and providing their own equipment to serve their respective communities.
Working with government and other agencies, ARES members provide much
needed communication support when infrastructure goes down or is
overloaded.

The ARES Section Emergency Coordinator, District Emergency Coordinators
and County Emergency Coordinators and their teams are the front line
folks that serve our communities in times of crisis. These individuals
put forth innumerable hours in training and emergency preparedness to
ensure professional support is available for their communities in times
of need.

Thank you ALL for your efforts and professionalism!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

73,
Dale

Panhandle ARC 2019 Ham of the Year

Kim Opitz, WA5X

Congratulations to Kim on her selection as Ham of the Year for 2019. Kim has served as Club President since January of 2018. She has participated in every club activity available such as Lamar Science Day, Boy Scout demonstrations, Van Work Days, Route 66 on the Air, Skywarn Expo, Amarillo OEM Prep Expo and Panhandle Regional Planning Commission Preparedness Conference, Field Day, and two bike race communications teams. She also co-organized (with her “better half” David WA5X) the special event station W5V commemorating Veterans’ Day in 2018 and “Welcome Home Vietnam Vets” at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial in 2019 and has been the club’s Tri-State Fair Parade participation organizer for the past two years.

As Club President, Kim has been instrumental in providing leadership that resulted in updated membership lists, replacement/upgrading the club repeaters, improving the annual swapfest to an actual HamFest with presentations and classes, club hospitality (coffee and donuts), club t-shirts, and many behind-the-scenes activities too numerous to list here.

Her can-do attitude and leadership by example is very much appreciated by the club and her fellow officers. Thank you for your service as Club President these past two years!

John Stratton N5AUS visit and September Club Meeting next Monday 16 Sept

This is an invitation to the Midland Amateur Radio Club’s September Club Meeting and visit by John Stratton N5AUS, acting Director of the West Gulf Division of the ARRL on 16 September.  The doors will open at 7:00 pm and the meeting will start at 7:30 pm.  There will be several door prizes, including a Baofeng UV-9R, the higher power version of the UV-5R.  A 2500mAh battery, speaker mic,  and software interface with cable are included.

I know that for many of you this is a long trip; however, I want to extend the invitation as it is a great opportunity.

Mr. Stratton will give us a first person update on the ARRL Board of Directors focus on topics facing modern Amateur Radio.  It will be a good opportunity to put him on the hot seat with your concerns and questions.  John has been a regular attendee of the St Patrick’s Day Hamfest and gives an informative presentation during the Section/Division Forum. If possible make plans to attend and bring a fellow ham with you. 73 and have fun,

David KF5WDJ

2019 West Texas Section Managers Award

Once again it is time for ARRL Field Day and once again, ARRL Affiliated
Clubs in the West Texas Section will be competing for the coveted West
Texas Section Manager’s Award. This will be the 17th year that
Affiliated Clubs have tested their emergency operating and traffic
handling skills in a friendly competition for the plaque that honors our
first West Texas ARRL Section Manager Gene Smith (SK). Gene (W5GSN/AE5I)
was known as “Mr. Traffic” for West Texas and it is fitting that we
honor those that excel in our annual emergency traffic event in his
name. The award will go to the highest scoring ARRL Affiliated West
Texas Section Club and will be presented at the Midland Hamfest in March
2020.
