Officer Elections
We have a ballot of new officers for the club. We will be holding the election during the November meeting. If you cannot attend the meeting in person or by Zoom, please submit your ballot by email to myself (dwwolfe67@gmail.com) or David Behrend (kb5fnk@gmail.com) before the meeting Thursday November 11 at 7 PM. Our incumbent officers are:

  • President: David Wolfe, KA5VTG
  • Vice-President: Jim Evans, K0ITL
  • Secretary/Treasurer: David Behrend, KB5FNK

Here is the current 2022 ballot:

President: Bob Heiser, W7IKT David Wolfe, KA5VTG
Vice-President: Dave Mulvey, K5DCM
Secretary: Matthew Morris, K5ICR
Treasurer: Jim Evans, K0ITL

The club president is the only position currently challenged. Bob Heiser served the club as a Member-At-Large, primarily taking care of our building and grounds. He and his wife Carol, N5CBQ put a lot of free time and effort into many projects, including selling some of our surplus equipment and organizing around the building. Bob has also presented many home-brew projects at club meetings. Carol makes snacks for us at the club meetings as well. As a result of Bob and Carol’s efforts, the club decided to award them with Lifetime Memberships.
As for me, it’s difficult to get some things accomplished when we only meet once a month. Over the last few years, I felt like the club was “spinning wheels” and not moving forward. I remember a time when our club was well-known in San Angelo. We participated in community events almost every month. As a Technician or General class operator, you could count on an Elmer to meet you at home or the clubhouse and show you how to make contacts on HF bands where you didn’t have privileges. We had regular testing sessions and regular technician classes. The club meetings should be more “hands-on” and less business. I’d like to see us make the club great again. I think Bob has many of the same goals in mind.
Vice-President Jim Evans chose to run as Treasurer instead of V-P. Since there are challengers for both Secretary and Treasurer, David Behrend chose not to run. There are spaces for write-in candidates for these positions.  Please check with the person to ensure they wish to hold office before writing them in.
The club bylaws allow for the separation of the Secretary-Treasurer position “depending on club needs.” Provided the current ballot of officers gets elected, we might consider changing the bylaws to further clarify this situation. In particular, rewording of Articles 3 and 4 will be needed. We will release a formal announcement after the November meeting.

Ham of the Year: Anyone can nominate a member for Ham of the Year for outstanding contributions throughout the year to the club and amateur community. Just email someone on the board (David Wolfe KA5VTG, David Behrend KB5FNK or Jim Evans K0ITL) your nominee for this award. Also explain in a few bullet points or sentences why this person should be Ham of the Year.

Spreader Award: This isn’t related to COVID-19. It’s for the person who has fertilized the airwaves or club meetings with nonsense and malarkey. The board is accepting nominations for this award as well.

Christmas Eatin’ Meetin’: Our annual Christmas Eatin’ Meetin’ will be on December 9 in place of our regular club meeting. We will meet at Golden Corral. We’ll meet about 6:30 PM. We will discuss a limited amount of business to have more time for fellowship and fun. We will also announce and present the Ham of the Year and Spreader Award recipients.

Club Picnic

The San Angelo Amateur Radio Club will hold it’s annual club picnic and birthday party October 16 at the clubhouse. We’ve been going strong now for 97 years! We’ll also have a short early morning workday at the clubhouse beginning at 7 AM. Picnic festivities will begin about 9 AM with a tailgate swap-meet in the parking lot. We will also cook hamburgers and hotdogs for lunch. You may bring any sides or deserts out to go with the burgers and hotdogs. We have water and sodas available at the clubhouse.
Part of our October meeting will be to discuss and plan the sides and desserts. I’ll start by offering to bring extra mayo and ketchup we have at the house.
We’ll discuss the workday planning and other activities at our club meeting October 14.

October, 2021

Here are a few things to look forward to this month in the San Angelo Amateur Radio Club. The San Angelo Amateur Radio Club will meet October 14th at 7 PM (1900 hrs.) at our clubhouse at 5513 Stewart Ln. Here are a few topics to discuss:
1. The club picnic (details below).
2. Officer nominations: It’s that time again to hold elections. We have nominations in October and the elections in November. This schedule allows us to have a good time and reduce the amount of business at our December Christmas Eatin’ Meetin’.
3. Ham of the Year & Spreader Award: This is something we haven’t done in recent years, but we are bringing it back. Anyone can nominate a member for Ham of the Year for outstanding contributions throughout the year to the club and amateur community. Just email someone on the board (David Wolfe KA5VTG, David Behrend KB5FNK or Jim Evans K0ITL your nominee for this award. The Spreader Award is not related to COVID-19. It’s for the person who has fertilized the airwaves or club meetings with nonsense and malarkey. The board is accepting nominations for this award as well.
4. Christmas Eatin’ Meetin’: Our annual Christmas Eatin’ Meetin’ will be on December 9 in place of our regular club meeting. While we’re still discussing a location, the current consensus is to have it at Golden Corral. We’ll meet about 6:30 PM. We will discuss a limited amount of business to have more time for fellowship and fun.

Good Evening,

I’m pleased to announce that the internet connection has been installed at the Clubhouse.

Project Summary:

  • Cellular 4G LTE Data, Unlimited and Unthrottled, using Sprint’s network (can also use TMobile), at a very low rate eligible to non-profit 501c3s
  • All Equipment was Donated, and enough funds raised for 18 months of service
  • Service is “month to month” and can be cancelled with 30 days notice, so the club is not stuck with a long term contract
  • You might be curious about some of the technical details about the cellular connections, and what tower the data might be carried over, so I have included some screenshots.
  • Wi-Fi is now open (credentials posted inside clubhouse) and available for any club member to use, and to facilitate Zoom meetings.   First “project” installed is a W5QX Clubhouse APRS position beacon over TCP/IP, using he APRS-fi app running on an old Android phone.
  • Future projects ideas include DMR hotspot in clubhouse, Allstar nodes, maybe someday we can do remote rig control of club station, etc.  The possibilities are endless!  Let’s hear your ideas.

If you have any questions or project ideas, please reply to this email!

73,
Dave K5DCM
