And now for the “Rest Of The Reminder”:
This is ……………… the weekly reminder of the Permian Basin ARES Net. Please, join us for the net Wednesday evenings at 9:00 pm CT (8:00 pm MT), all licensed Amateur Radio Operators are welcome.
The net operates on the West Texas Connection Repeater System with links to the Lea County Amateur Radio Group’s repeaters and Mr. Von Weddige’s Artesia repeater. The frequencies for these repeaters are listed at the bottom of this email. If the WTC Big Spring hub is offline, the Big Spring area may be linked in through the 146.820 repeater and Echolink (node W5AW). An Echolink node is also available on the local 146.900 WTC Midland repeater (node W5JDO-R). Echolink is not a perfect solution; however, it allows communication across the area if needed.
Activation of the Net is made by request from a served agency or a net participant with a developing event in their local area (be it an emergency or severe weather). If you have a developing event in your area, please call the net manager, or a designated assistant to activate the net. You can find the contact information below. Also, when you become aware of an emergency or threatening severe weather, please monitor the repeaters (or other designated frequencies) and provide needed assistance. A Net Control Station will activate the net and contact the appropriate emergency responders or relay weather observations into the National Weather Service Midland Forecast Office. The net should be responsive to times of need in the covered area. In such a large area, this is the best way for us to be available when needed.
If there is an area wide need we will be on the WTC Repeater System with the SE New Mexico repeater links. If it is a local event, we will request assistance from stations nearest the need. Our first choice is to use the repeater system for all responses. If for some reason there is an break in the backbone of the repeater system, there are three Echolink stations on local repeaters operating to get around a break in the linked repeaters – 146.820 in Big Spring, 444.150 in Hobbs and 443.275 in Midland. If the outage is more widespread in the system area, check the following frequency to locate the Net: 7.248 MHz – 40 Meters (ATTENTION: requires a General Class license or higher). Note: If the designated frequency is in use, the net will move down in 5 kHz steps to the first clear frequency below the one being used. The choice of 5 kHz steps is to prevent interference. If 2 meter or 70 centimeter simplex is the logical choice for a situation, we will use either 146.47 MHz or 446.47 MHz. These simplex frequencies will have limited coverage and will be used only where appropriate (i.e. where line of sight will work).”
The Permian Basin ARES Net is open to all who have earned an Amateur Radio license and all are welcome. You do not have to be a member of ARES. (NOTE: your information will NOT be shared with anyone without your permission.)
We look forward to hearing you on the net. This net does not have members – it has participants, due to the large area covered by the repeater systems. The hope is that everyone will participate; especially, in times of need such as emergencies, weather events, natural disasters etc. In other words – when other modes of communication are not available, or are limited, and when the National Weather Service needs our ground truth observations through the SKYWARN program.
As always, we thank the members of the West Texas Connection, the Lea County Amateur Radio Group, and Von Weddige for allowing us to use their linked repeaters. Without their generosity and dedication we would not have coverage over such a large area. They are committed to serving the ham community with their personal time and resources. If you cross paths with any of the trustees involved; please, shake their hand and say “Thanks”.
NO GIFT IS TOO SMALL!
Please, consider a financial gift to an amateur radio cause. Donations to the West Texas Connection 501 (c) 3 are tax deductible. This group is a worthy cause which would be very grateful for gifts of any size, as it is fairly expensive to keep the system running; and, that is not even mentioning the time involved (which is freely given). All funds are utilized to keep the repeaters up and running.
Donations can be sent to:
