Thursday Section Zoom Session

Zoom Meerting
Hello All,
I trust you are well and enjoying the weather, except for the storms…  But it is storm season and those of us living in West Texas know that the storms are as regular as clockwork this time of the year…
David, W5JDO and I have come to a decision based on the dwindling attendance for our Zoom meetings.  Following this week’s meeting, we are going to take a break until Thursday September 12, 2024.   We have over 160 folks receiving the email invitation and attendance has dropped to below 10% of that number.   Out of the 71 ARRL Sections, we are the only Section that has provided a weekly forum for Section members that gives them the opportunity to interact with other members and Section Leadership on a weekly basis.  We have held  211 Zoom meetings since we started doing this at the beginning of the COVID pandemic four years ago.
This is not to say that we will not hold “special Zoom meetings” to discuss pertinent events, such as major news from ARRLnew programs, disaster assistance needed or other needs.  We continue to be dedicated to serving you, the West Texas Section membership.
We realize that the lack of programs contributes to the loss of attendees.  However, for many reasons we have been unable to find guest speakers because of their busy schedules or having made several presentations on a topic.  They want the requester (us) to show a video of one of their previous presentations.    The downside of watching videos is that we have no interaction with the presenter and oftentimes left with unanswered questions.  We also feel that watching videos can be accomplished by any of us individually at our convenience.
ARES Discussion this week will focus on a recent meeting with a cities management team in the Section, and, a real world planned event that required some last minute modifications.

We look forward to Lew, KB5HPT telling us about this week’s Winlink Tuesday results.  Whit’s Trivia question was not discussed at last week’s Zoom meeting so we will present it again this week.   This ham was once an engineer at a  public radio station and had a BS in astronomy. Later he was known for catching computer hackers and raised questions about the influence of the Internet on future society, and whether it would be beneficial. He made various predictions such as calling e-commerce nonviable (due to a lack of personal contact and secure online funds transfers) and the future of printed news publications (“no online database will replace your daily newspaper”).  Who is he?

See you there!

73,

dale
